What are the benefits of sunbeds?
There are more benefits to tanning than just looking and feeling good. Indoor tanning offers some of the same benefits as the sun, but in a controlled environment. Don't have time to sunbathe outdoors? Indoor tanning helps you develop color within a short period of time. Other benefits include an improvement in your mood and self esteem, minimizing the the visibility of scars and stretch marks, promoting oil production and hormonal balance, increasing the production of vitamin D, and even helping with weight loss.
How does UV exposure tan the skin?
Tanning takes place in the skin's outermost layer, the epidermis, with special cells called melanocytes. When exposed to UV-B (short for ultraviolet light), melanocytes produce the pigment, melanin. The pinkish melanin travels up through the epidermis and is absorbed by other skin cells. When exposed to to UV-A (longer wave ultraviolet light), melanin oxidizes or darkens. This is the skin's way of protecting itself against too much UV light.
Why does a tan fade?
Cells in the epidermis are constantly reproducing and pushing older cells upward toward the surface of your skin. As your skin replaces its cells, the cells laden with melanin are removed. So the tanning process must continue with the new cells.
What is you skin type?
Before you start tanning it's important to know your skin type to avoid over exposure and burning. Speak with one of our trained tanning consultants to get your tan on! They will discuss your tanning history, sensitivity tot UV light, maximum tan times in our sunbeds, and skincare product recommendations for the best results.
Sunbed Tanning Tips
Tanning is your body's natural defense against burning. When your skin is exposed to UV light, the production of melanin in your skin is increased. The sun creates two types of UV light: UVA and UVB. UVA ozidizes the exiling melanin, the browning pigment that tans the skin. UVB triggers the production of additional melanin in the skin. Both UVA and UVB are needed for a balanced tan. If you are pale, always start slow with your tanning regimen to avoid burning. You want to slowly increase your exposure, too minimize the risk of burning and develop a beautiful natural tan.
Before you Tan:
- Shower and Exfoliate
- Moisturize regularly, as hydrated skin will hold a better tan
- Remove makeup
- Avoid wearing deodorant or perfume
- Remove watches and jewelry to avoid unsightly tan lines
- If you take medications, talk to your doctor to be sure your medication isn't photosensitive (meaning it can be weekend or otherwise affected by UV exposure).
Durning your Session:
- Use lip balm - lips can burn easily!
- Apply tanning lotion immediately before your session.
- Please do not use oils in the tanning bed. They break down our acrylics
- Apply either SPF or tattoo friendly lotion to avoid your tattoos from fading.
- Federal & State laws require you o use protective eyewear.
- Be careful about areas hat are not accustomed to sunlights. We provide towels if you need to cover sensitive areas for the first couple of sessions.
- Stop tanning if your skin starts to sting or tingle, which can indicate overexposure to UV rays.
After your Session:
- Apply a tan extender as soon as your session ends. Tan extenders are the best product to keep your tan looking rich and golden longer and will nourish your skin
- If you feel as though you have overexposed, use an aloe-based relief lotion or gel as soon as possible
- If you are establishing a base tan, you will want t come in about 7 to 10 times to achieve the best color.
- If you are maintaining your current color, you will want to come in anywhere from 1 to 4times a week, depending on the beds your are using
Skin Care Tips
Follow a good daily skin care regimen can extend the life of your tan and keep your skin healthy and glowing.
Exfoliate: exfoliate weekly - Exfoliatting too much can scrub away layers of your tan and shorten its lifespan.
Moisturize daily! Tanning can dry out your skin, and color absorbs and develops better in hydrated skin. It's extremely important to moisturize regular to replenish moisture particularly before and after sessions.
Pay special attention to your face:
- Washing your face daily- morning & night
- Being sure tot wash off makeup before each tanning visit
- Use a facial lotion with SPF every day
